Sep 19, Kristy rated it really liked it. He is a child of the 90s He desperately wants to meet him and get to know who this mysterious man in his life is. While death of someone closes the emotional door in some sense, the ‘disappearance’ keeps the door open with eternal hope, waiting and driving oneself to madness. Some people may understand and enjoy the book more than I did. The papers that certified this were on demasaidos night table.
On the other hand we have quite the scattershot approach, pretty botched and messy in the worst parts about Mateo’s desire to meet his father. Although this is the first book I lauea read by the author, she is well-known and respected.

I think something must have been lost in the translation of the book. I received this book directly from the marketing department at DoubleDay books through a GoodReads contest. All three strands tie and echo fairly well, but the tone overall and some stilted language due to the translation? Restrepo describes the endless agony of those whose dear ones had ‘ disappeared’.
Parts of it seem to be trying too hard. This work trails a mother and son: The boy grew up without the father, and so they have come back to Argentina to find him. I received this book from a goodreads firstreads giveaway. In her words, this was the beginning of the fall of the dictatorship.
She had actually lived there for four years as a member of the underground resistance, married an Argentine and had a son from him in Buenos Aires. I felt like I was walking in the dark through the entire book. It doesn’t help that he already knows half of the story beforehand, it helps even less reshrepo there’s little reason for him to not know just the half of it.
Contains desaparecidos, broken relationships, convincing teenagerness, the humor of families, tender descriptions of Buenos Aires, and some really compelling writing.

She has inspired me to read some of her other works. I’m giving this 3 stars on Goodreads because of how much I did enjoy the flashbacks, but that’s all. This story and the story of the abduction and recovery of the son at an early age by the father form the other two narrative strands. If I hadn’t won this book and felt obligated to finish it I would have put it down after the first hour of reading. It is hard to imagine that she ever had any political passion or that he will ever care for anything but his video game.
